Chachoengsao is one of the cleanest “get out of Bangkok for a day” options on rails. You do not need a long bus, a domestic flight, or a complicated transfer. You need a ticket east and a few hours of curiosity.
Why go by train?
Traffic out of Bangkok can erase a car’s theoretical time advantage. The train is predictable, social, and part of the experience: vendors, landscape, and that soft shift from megacity to province. Occasional special steam-train excursions also run this corridor, which tells you how scenic the line feels to Thai travelers themselves.
Stations & journey time
Services to Chachoengsao typically leave from Bangkok’s main long-distance hubs. Schedules change, so always check the official State Railway of Thailand (SRT) app or counter on the day you travel. In normal conditions the ride is around one hour.
- Buy a ticket at the station or via official SRT channels
- Keep small cash for snacks and local transport on arrival
- Third-class open carriages are fine for a short hop; air-con seats cost more and feel softer
Arriving at Chachoengsao station
The station drops you into the town’s practical center of gravity. From here you can:
- Head to Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan and the riverside
- Reach Baan Mai Riverside Market
- Continue to Mama Sue at Krazy Home in about 10 minutes
Local options include songthaew, motorcycle taxi, taxi apps where available, or a pre-arranged pickup when you book the room.
Day trip vs overnight
Day trip
Possible and popular. Hit Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan, Baan Mai Riverside Market, and Wat Saman Rattanaram, then return to Bangkok. You will move faster and miss Wat Pho Bang Khla at dusk unless you plan carefully.
Overnight at Krazy Home
One private room is ฿500. You get AC, a clean bed, and a host who knows how to welcome foreigners after 30 years of it. Evening becomes river air and fields, not a rush for the last connection.
Good curry doesn’t hurry. Neither does a good day in Chachoengsao.

Driving or van/bus services also take roughly an hour outside peak traffic. Useful if you carry a lot of luggage or want door-to-door flexibility. For most backpackers and city-break travelers, the train is the more memorable choice.
